  • Big Chip Out of Pavillion…… Any Ideas?

Natural clear quartz with no visible inclusions, brass pavillion dop with CA glue, soaked in acetone to remove, no heat……. a big chip came out when I removed it from the dop. What happened? Any help would be appreciated……

    Thanks in advance,

Interesting… there must have been a small bubble or inclusion that pulled away with the CA. Thats all I could imagine.

Yeah, it’s strange. You’re probably right. I’ve never had that happen before. Maybe a small inclusion I couldn’t see…..

The chip is rounded. Almost the same shape as a cone dop. Did you put a lot of pressure down on the stone when you were cutting the crown or did you drop the stone on the lap at any time?

Hi Tom, I think you nailed it. Yes, I’ve been known to drop the stone on the lap from time to time, like when the cat unexpectedly jumps up on you or someone slams a door……. I matched the cone dop up to the chips and they fit perfectly. Thanks….. I’ll try to be more careful in the future.
