That “smudge” is pretty common with garnet—often it means the pre-polish isn’t fully clean or the lap is slightly overcharged. You might try a 3k diamond on a Batt or Darkside lap for a cleaner pre-polish before going to cerium, or even switch to diamond polish (50k/100k) instead of cerium. Also keep pressure light and make sure everything is super clean between steps—it makes a bigger difference than it seems.
