If you have the money to spend like that you can go with Lab Grown Ruby’s used in laser diodes. They are normally cylinder shaped so its easier working with and also cheaper. For your first cuts try and get some spinel or quartz to cut on for cheap. I would say for a DIY stone on a ring, cut maybe 10-15 pieces of spinel or quartz then give it a try on your lab grown ruby. If you can handle cutting that well and wanna go the route of buying a piece of rough I would think you’d be ready by then.
