2026 Competition
I am considering entering at the novice or pre-master level this year. The novice level clearly states material is cutter’s choice. The Pre-Master level says spinel is the material and the rules state that the pattern will state if the material can be natural or synthetic, but it just says spinel. Does anyone know if it can be synthetic? I don’t think I’ve ever found natural spinel at the required size?

Synthetic is fine. Natural in that size would be $$$. If you need some, I’ll be happy to send you some, I did a bulk Djeva purchase when the were discontinued and have 15-20 boules in various shades of blue.

@Scary Teacher 3D I would assume synthetic spinel is allowed unless the rules specifically say “natural spinel only.” Most competition guidelines I’ve seen treat “spinel” as including both natural and synthetic unless otherwise stated, especially at the Pre-Master level where affordability and availability matter. The USFG guidelines even mention “synthetic spinel or corundum” as appropriate Pre-Master materials.
