LD GEMS V2.2 Platen Alignment
I got my LD GEMS V2.2 faceting machine unpacked, inspected for damages, and started to do the alignment checks and adjustments, if needed.
The first item to check was the platen. I have a Mitutoyo dial gauge and an off-brand holder. I would like to be able to post photographs of the results, but this forum isn’t that well developed to accept photos, yet. I took 4 compass point photos of the platen and the gauge. As I turned the platen carefully by hand, the needle on the gauge did not even waver! I am amazed, as I have watched videos on YouTube, and the needles of the gauges most often moved half a thousandth. No movement at all on my machine. So far, I am well pleased. Now on to the master lap to see how that fares.
What about my machine and how well did it travel from Vietnam to Texas? First a note about the packaging. It was superb. 2 boxes, heavy duty corrugated cardboard. Inside were layers of custom cut foam packing providing lots of protection. Keep in mind that there is always a careless fool at UPS and other shipping agencies, and one of my boxes got into “its” hands. There was a large dent in one box. As luck would have it, this was the box within a box that held the mast. The inner box is made of computer-generated fiberboard. It was insulated from the outer box with at least 2″ of foam-sheet packing. The mast and head were inside the inner box, and they were well protected with more foam-sheet packing. Hey, this guy knows how to pack, BUTT it seems that there is always someone to take up the challenge to destroy whatever is inside the boxes. The box had to have been dropped from a height or thrown at something rigid as there was damage to both of the boxes. Inside the inner most box the index gear sustained some damage to 3 teeth. It will be replaced ASAP. Unbelievable, but true. Not a good report for UPS.
