Tucson 2019
Will there be a scheduled social event?
The information released so far mentions the tour, classes and lectures. One of the best parts of Tucson is getting to meet folks in person. Is there going to be something other than time between lectures?

Sorry. The TGMS USFG Frolic did not mention a HobNob. The OPLC will host a HobNob again this year, Saturday 9th, 6PM till ? is what I understand.
I suggest attending the “Ask the Panel Discussion” at 3PM, then stay for the HobNob. There is a fee for dinner. Or you could come at 10AM for my discussion about Historic Gem Designs. Glenn Klein, the Founder of the USFG will be there as well….great to meet him!!!!!Jeff Theesfeld

Is it necessary to register for the lectures or dinner? I would like to attend, but don’t want to crash the party!

Can you go into any more detail about the “hobnob”?
I got there late last year, but as I recall, there was a speaker, the local club had some awards and there was the “pretty stone” contest”.As for getting there earlier for the talks and panel discussion, that is a problem. Too many shows to see and quite a few only go through Sunday. I do wish the USFG events were the following week. Will plan on the dinner event though.

Is the hobnob different than the frolic? Is the dinner with the frolic or the hibnob?

The Faceter’s Frolic is put on by the USFG at the OPLC facilities. It includes all the activities from Feb 6th through the 9th (ending 5PM), listed in the Frolic Notice, put out by the USFG.
The Hobnob is hosted by the OPLC, and was not posted anywhere…sorry. This should begin around 6PM, Sat, Feb. 9th, and will include a dinner, another “Pretty Gem Contest” (Synthetic and Natural groups), facet rough dealers, sales tables, and perhaps a short presentation this year by the USFG President, but no scheduled presentation I am aware of. This should be more of a “Get to Know Each Other” session this year. I think you would need to contact the OPLC to get dinner information, time, cost, menu, etc.

There is no need to register for Frolic Lectures, nor the Dinner, but there will be a fee for the HobNob dinner, if you eat. They charged to enter the facility for the HobNob last year, and I assume it is the same this year.

The HobNob is the same location as the Frolic at the OPLC (Old Pueblo Lapidary Club). The OPLC location is listed on every Event on this website, with a map.

For those going to Tucson, Hi, I’m jealous, have fun for me. I received an email from Shelly Sergent, the curator for Somewhere in the Rainbow, a traveling gem collection, used for education and display. One of my Mason County, Texas topaz is in the collection and is part of the exhibit in the AGTA show. It is a square star cut, designed by Charles Covill. While not the darkest blue found in Mason County, it is a beautifully saturated blue. Please send me a photo of it in the exhibit. Thanks, fellow cutters, Diane Eames GG
