if the color is only in one direction and the material is large enough that is the direction of the point and table. if to narrow then through the side and if an emerald cut the ends will show some color. with tourmaline some times its through the side if through the end is too dark. in any case place the color in the pavilion if possible to get max colors from finished stone.
