I have been cutting some oval designs lately and am having trouble with the meet points. The designs that i have cut previously were simple and didn’t require much thought about l/w ratio. My question is do ovals require the exact l/w ratio of the design. Thanks Rick!

    Rick,

Oval designs are created with a specific length to width ratio. If you want to cut a stone to fit a 3 by 5 setting you need to use a design with the same l/w ration. For example an oval design with a 2 to 1 ration will not fit a 3 to 5 setting. This is assuming of course that you are doing meet point faceting.

Now with that said, you can take a design that does not have the desired l/w ration and using Gem Cad you can alter it to fit your desired l/w ration. The best person to consult on that subject is the Gem Cad author, Robert Strickland.

Thanks Tom I Appreciate your comments. I recently purchased Gemcad and am working my way through the learning curve of the program, Unfortunately i’m computer program illiterate so it will take me a while to learn all the benefits of Gemcad.

    Rick:

I read your other posts on the yahoo group where you mentioned you are working through the learning curve on GemCad and GemWin. Two great options for helping with that: first, Robert Strickland has put up videos on YouTube to watch http://www.gemcad.com/learn.html and, second, he frequently teaches classes at the various Faceters Frolics around the country. His next class is for the Franklin Faceters Frolic scheduled for July 28, 29 and 30, 2016.
