Tagged: Transfer dop
Today I was starting to pre-polish a stone when I accidentally hit the stone on the spindle and poped the stone off the dop.
As I grumbled and started to attempt to re-dop the stone I noticed how my Graves transfer fixture doesn’t really have any support for centering the stone while attaching it.
So, I’ve decided I’m in the market for a new transfer fixture. Anyone have any favorites? Better yet, have any links or suggestions as to who is selling those favorites. 🙂
I like the Polymetric, but several fixtures are better than the Graves. http://polymetricinc.com/
It can stand on end, so doesn’t need anything special to hold the stone.
I have tried the graves, an early ultra tec which was barely adequate, and now use a facetron which works very well. It doesn’t have a provision for centering a stone during initial dopping but I have not needed that capability.
You can center the stone by using the table dop from hyperedge laps. It can work with the transfer fixture from Facetron which is currently my favorite transfer fixture. The table dop I mentioned is by far the most convenient I’ve seen so far for centering stones.
Graves sells a pro dop station that is the polymetric made for graves with alignment holes for getting those dops straight the 1st time and every time. Polymetrics is an awesome station and the one they make for graves is even better. The alignments are drilled in and a tool fits the hole perfectly for making those critical alignments. I also use a magnetic laser beam that gives me a very straight line while aligning on the machine.
hey i use green dopping wax but i make sure i have plenty on the dop and stone and if during completing transfer or cutting and polishing, if i have a good matching pattern in seating it back on i use a drop of modelers((airplane builders) purple gap filling cyno glue and it locks it in it place and we can finish our work as we started it. no heat needed, no shifting.
