First off, I was interested to see it shows 895 members. I think that is about twice what it was when this site was set up with the initial directory. Is this number accurate? Has USFG grown membership that much or do we have members with multiple identity issues?
The other thing of interest was the display of the when last active. It showed at least 50% of the members as “never active”. That includes some that changed their avatar and background image and filled in their profile. For instance, out newsletter editor, Dan Lynch, currently shows as “never active” despite a nicely done profile and forum activity. What gives?
For a large membership you would think a bit more activity would happen. At least showing off the mistakes. How does the list of members help us? I know for those who have helped me have been awesome. I hope to meet face to face someday. For now the site seems bland and a point of belonging to to get to get to those event notices.
I know for a beginner and student that I am, this is still a good place to be and I am getting to know more folks on the social media side as well.
It would be nice if we were able to connect those sides of ourselves to bring more continuity and activity from those who do post in other places.
I like the site archives and do look forward to the newsletters and hope someday to contribute something meaningful. Facebook
But just adding a link is old school and most may not try.
Perhaps folks are on vacation and things will pick up in another week or so.
The membership list as it is currently is not very helpful. It was better initially since the search worked on all public fields in the profiles. As a result I got to meet with another local faceter and through him, met a beginner who he was helping. Now we are trying to find a few others in the area so that we might get together on occasion.
And as you mentioned, the ability to find your online friends should you travel to their area is another way that the membership directory used to help.
Even when it did search better, the location search was very limited since it was a fill in the blank field instead of a drop down list, many people put in the two letter state abbreviation. For most states, that combination of letters matches all sorts of other things so the results were not helpful.
