I can’t cut it. I’ve cut the pavilion five times and every time the P2 facet is too high on the upper side. The rest of the barion is fine and the ratio is 1.3. What an I doing wrong?

Kind of hard to tell without watching you cut it. If you have GemCad, have you stepped through the cut with the Replay command?

Another way to step through the cut is available at x-gem

GemCaddWin says the design is fine. I use a Facetron, am Certified as a novice, and have cut several different ovals in the meantime with no problems. The P2’s meet in the corners and the girdle is level. The P2’s are the only ones that never match up to the P3’s. I’ve tried writing a secret spell on a piece of paper and burying it under a crossroads at midnight, but nothing seems to help. HELP!

I didn’t mean to use GemCad to evaluate the design, but to use the Replay function to observe the cut one facet at a time, comparing with what you see while actually cutting. Same with x-gem.

I’m busy for the next couple of days, but I intend to do a test cut eventually, and I’ll watch for gotchas.

Thank you! I did use the replay on Gem Cadd and everything went perfectly, so evidently the diagram is right but I don’t see how every single meet is on except just the four P2’s. It just about has to be something I’m doing wrong.

I finally managed to download the gemcad file — had to use “save as” instead of just trying to open it with my browser. Jim, take a close look at the replay function in GemCad and you’ll see that the G2 facet doesn’t meet the G1-P1 facets. I’m not sure how the folks got this to come out, but it ain’t right — in either the file on this site or the slightly different file published in the Dec. newsletter. Try “cutting” the stone in gemcad using the directions and sequence posted for either design and you’ll see the P2 non-meet problem. If you use Mitch’s original instructions on the gemology site you’ll be able to cut it. I would change the P8 and P9 order (easier to form a new culet meetpoint with 4 facets) and also you’ll probably discover that a P8 angle of 39.25º works better to get both meets. Good luck.

I agree in having this meet problem. I still have some room to adjust the angles to meet before I have to use my current piece for another cut. I will look into the suggestion posted. Thanks for the tip Keith.

Hey there all! Sorry for the delay in seeing this, and thanks for bringing it to our attention.

The original design, “Beginner Barion Oval”, has a unique mismatch at the spot you have all mentioned. The original cutting order as found on the Gemology Project had cutters do the mains, then the barion facets, then the girdle. By doing the design in this order, it circumvented the problem.

For the competition, we tweaked the position of that girdle facet to avoid the problem, so that cutters would be able to do mains-girdle-barions OR mains-barions-girdle. However, it looks like particular version of the .GEM file that got uploaded to the USFG site didn’t have that tweak.

We’re working on fixing it now.

I put up the corrected design in pdf format. This is the same as is published in the competition announcement in the December 2015 newsletter (page 15).

Unfortunately the website was being designed at the exact same time as the newsletter was published with the correction and the old design was accidentally inserted in the website.

Every time I try to download the GemCad file, I get some funky coding on the screen. I tried this with all the other designs and the same thing happened. What am I doing wrong? I finally ended up retyping the whole design in GemCad myself after downloading the PDF. Just curious…

    HI Tim,

What browser are you using? Tray “Save as” to your computer and see if that works. We are working on this any trying to pin down what causes this for some users.

    Tom,

I’m using Internet Explorer. I’ll try a different browser and see if I can get it to work.

    Thanks,
    Tim

    Tom,

Google Chrome Browser worked fine. Don’t know the reason IE won’t work. But thanks for the suggestion.

    Tim
