There is an online broker with a list of currently wanted material that they will make an offer to buy, they appraise and make an offer. I am about to give this a try to see how their appraisal compares to a fair market appraisal and will report back. I also found consignment shops in my area that have jewelers on staff that offer joint venture opportunity to offer locally produced, custom pieces as a marketing tool as well as retail space.
Go with the consignment shop. That is an opportunity with the best shot. The guy online examining and appraising your gems means you are competing with Asian cut gems. Don’t compete- stand out. Taking your gems to a bench jeweler or fine jeweler is a good idea. Don’t be put off when the jeweler says no- just ask why and if it’s the quality, work on it.
Sorry your gems are not selling now, but neither is anyone else’s. Be aware this is a hard time for the jewelry industry. This is an industry still shrinking, due to poor sales all across the country. These are known retailers and wholesalers.
