Advice on Meetpoint Drift When Transferring to Pavilion – What Am I Missing?
Hi everyone,
I’m hoping someone here can help me troubleshoot a recurring issue I’m having when cutting precision designs.
I’m working on a round brilliant in quartz, and everything lines up perfectly on the crown. But once I transfer to the pavilion and start cutting the mains, I consistently notice the meetpoints are drifting slightly—sometimes just enough to throw off the symmetry at the culet. I’m using a Graves Mark 5XL with an Ultra-Tec transfer jig, and I’m being as careful as possible during the dop transfer (checking alignment under a loupe, etc.).
Here are a few specifics:

Stone is dopped with wax on the crown side.
Using a keyed dop for transfer.
I let the wax fully cool and double-check google baseball alignment.
Pavilion girdle facets usually show the drift first.
My question is: What are the most common (or subtle) causes of meetpoint drift during transfer that you’ve encountered?
Could it be a slight misalignment in the jig? Or am I possibly doing something wrong in the waxing or seating of the dop?
Any input or troubleshooting steps would be greatly appreciated — I know this is something many of you have likely dealt with and overcome.
Thanks in advance!
– Mark S.
